BrLab - Project Development Lab
BrLab is an annual event dedicated to the audiovisual market, with training and developing initiatives through and different simultaneous workshops and laboratories project development laboratory aimed at prospective films in the development, financing and editing stages.
With 15 years of experience, BrLab receives projects from all over Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula and Italy and promotes multiple workshops and international meetings, including development, editing and coproduction workshops, as well as several activities open to the public such as panels, seminars and debates, which take place in person and are also live streamed in order to promote the event’s democratization and accessibility. In this year of 2025, it'll also receive projects from Africa, France and French Guiana in the new workshop Transatlantic Narratives. BrLabs main objective is to contribute to stimulate and enrich the creative and economic development of the audiovisual industry, accelerating talents and projects through its different activities, as well as the articulating professionals from different countries and industry audiovisual sectors.
It’s a unique space in Brazil in which young creative talents work on their projects intensively in an immersive environment while in contact with consultants and lecturers, in a format which enhances cultural and economic exchange and stimulates coproductions. For this reason, BrLab accumulates successful cases of films released in Brazil and abroad and has quickly consolidated, throughout its 15 years of existence, as an event of international reference among the most important development platforms, laboratories and similar training and market initiatives.
In 2025, BrLab presents:
- BrLab Features - aimed at the development of fiction projects selected through open submissions.
- BrLab Audience Design - organized in partnership with Projeto Paradiso to promote debates on audience design for projects supported by the institution.
- BrLab Rough Cut - for films in the post-production stage.
- Transatlantic Narratives - workshop debuting in 2025 aimed at projects in development from Africa, Latin America and France, with mentorships on film production and screenwriting.
- BrPlot - lectures and seminars on screenwriting in partnership with ABRA – Brazilian Association of Screenwriters.
- Reach - encounter on audiovisual audience design with public debates.
- Mostra BrLab – retrospectiva com programação de filmes que participaram dos diferentes workshops do BrLab nos últimos anos, incluindo sessões especiais com debates abertos ao público.
In addition to the main event, BrLab also promotes regional activities in different states of Brazil, publications, and initiatives in partnership with renowned institutions.
BrLab launched an editorial label and had its first book published during the laboratory's activities in August 2018: a Portuguese translation of the book “Eliseo in 100 Questions”, by Chilean screenwriter Julio Rojas, written based on conversations with the Dean of the Screenwriting Chair at EICTV (and consultant at BrLab), Eliseo Altunaga. Starting in 2019, BrLab began a series of publications of classic screenplays from Brazilian cinema and has books on the films “A Wolf at the Door”, by Fernando Coimbra, and “The Second Mother”, by Anna Muylaert.
A first panorama of the projects that have participated in BrLab and were later released was presented in 2016 at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in São Paulo, during the first Mostra de Filmes BrLab (BrLab Film Festival). A second edition of the Mostra also took place in 2019. Considering the films that are also scheduled for release in 2023, there are already 50 concluded films which participated in BrLab during their development stages. e 27 obras em conclusão que passaram pelo BrLab na fase de desenvolvimento.
